Connections to existing railways

On the HSL route, the high-speed trains run on newly laid HSL track, wherever it is possible to travel at such high speeds. However, from Amsterdam to just beyond Schiphol Airport and at the other HSL stations, the high speed trains travel on existing tracks.

Accordingly, the HSL track connects with existing tracks in five locations:

  • Hoofddorp
  • Rotterdam-West
  • Rotterdam-Lombardijen
  • Zevenbergschen Hoek
  • Breda

Hoofddorp

To connect the HSL with the existing track at NS station Hoofddorp, two fly-overs, a substation and a relay facility are under construction. In addition, access and exit tracks (also called maintenance yard) are laid out to transfer materials from the existing tracks to the HSL track. In the superstructure phase, the rails will be laid and overhead wires and sound barriers will be installed. Besides this, a lot of work is done to ensure the future safety in and around the train.

Rotterdam-West

The high-speed trains approach Rotterdam via a rail viaduct over the A20 motorway. The trains will then emerge directly from the 4-kilometre tunnel in Rotterdam-Overschie. In Rotterdam the track leads directly to Rotterdam Central Station: After crossing the A20, the high-speed trains will cross the Kanaalweg road over a viaduct. A little further, the HSL track crosses the Stadhouderweg road in Rotterdam, again over a viaduct.

In the so-called railway triangle, near Blijdorp Zoo, the train passes under two regular tracks through a dive-under. In this railway triangle, two fly-overs are built for regular NS trains. In this way, extra space is created at ground level to lay out the two HSL tracks.

Rotterdam-Lombardijen

The train branches off in the direction of Rotterdam Central Station. After leaving the station, the train continues on existing track to Barendrecht, not stopping at any intermittent stations. Near Barendrecht Station, the HSL train rides over fly-over and through a dive-under, and then, after passing Barendrecht, the train changes from the right-hand track to the left-hand track. This is necessary for the connection with the Belgian railway network, where trains ride on the left-hand side.

Zevenbergschen Hoek

At Lage Zwaluwe Station, a pedestrian bridge has been built to connect the west side and east side of the station. The pedestrian bridge has exits to all the platforms. Just beyond Lage Zwaluwe, the HSL track connects with the existing track bound for Breda. The through high speed train will continue on the HSL track, but the trains to and from Breda will use the existing track.

Breda

From Breda Central Station high speed trains will travel to Antwerp and Rotterdam/the Hague. To make this possible, connecting tracks have been built between the existing railway and the HSL. The tracks in the direction of Rotterdam are situated at Zonzeel junction. A new fly-over crosses the existing track. The connecting tracks in the direction of Antwerp are located along the existing route Breda-Roosendaal (west of Breda).
