The HSL will consolidate the international competitive position of the Netherlands. The combination of a good connection with Europe and good domestic infrastructure is intended to provide an economic impulse for the Netherlands as a whole, and for the Randstad in particular.
When the high speed line becomes operational, with stations in Amsterdam, Schiphol, the Hague, Rotterdam and Breda, not only will it bring many more visitors to the Randstad (Rotterdam is expecting almost twice as many in 20 years, from 40 to 75 million), but the Netherlands will also become more appealing as place of business for new companies. European regions are competing with each other to attract business activities. Infrastructure, labour market and business climate are the principal distinguishing factors in this respect. For instance, General Motors decided to establish its Opel Benelux Organization in Breda, because of the new HSL station.
In addition, the Netherlands will keep playing a role in the area of sports or cultural events. Countries and/or regions are always competing to attract international events. Whether it concerns the European Football Championships, the European tour of U2, the treasures of the pharaoh or the Rotterdam International Film Festival. Accessibility is always an important criterion in this.
